Gauteng to launch Women's Month programme

18 July 2007

Members of the media are invited to a Gauteng Provincial Government's media
briefing to launch its programme for Women's Month, which will be held under
the theme, "Making Gauteng a better place for women".

Date: Wednesday, 25 July 2007
Time: 12h00
Venue: Office of the Premier, 30 Simmonds Street, Johannesburg

The launch will be addressed by Gauteng MEC for Local Government, Qedani
Mahlangu, who will outline planned Women's Month activities including the third
provincial women's dialogue on 1 and 2 August. MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and
Recreation, Barbara Creecy, will expand on the plans to commemorate national
Women's Day on Thursday, 9 August.

A series of Women's Month activities are planned to highlight government
programmes aimed at improving women's lives and promoting women's empowerment
in the province.

These include the women's dialogue, women's izimbizo, an economic
opportunities road show aimed at women and departmental events highlighting
projects and programmes for women. Together with women from a variety of civil
society sectors, the provincial government will assess progress in the
political, economic and social empowerment of women and determine priorities
ahead in making Gauteng a better place for women.

Every year, August is devoted to Women's Month and we commemorate national
Women's Day on 9 August to pay tribute to the heroic women who marched to the
Union Buildings on that day in 1956 to protest against the apartheid pass
laws.
