Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works and existing
commuter organisations will launch a new Gauteng Commuter Organisation on
Friday, 25 August 2006 in Turffontein.
This initiative is aimed at strengthening the voice of commuters in building
an efficient, reliable, accessible, affordable, safe and environmentally
friendly public transport system. The new organisation is being established as
a result of extensive consultation with existing commuter organisations and
representatives in the province. This will be an independent and autonomous
body, with its own constitution that will champion the interests of commuters
in Gauteng. The Gauteng Commuter Organisation will also serve as a major
advocacy tool for the improvement of the quality of public transport services
on rail, buses and taxis.
