As part of its contribution to the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence
Against Women and Children Abuse campaign, the Gauteng Department of Housing
will on 29 November and 5 December renovate shelters for abused women and
children.
This year marks a new chapter as the department engages in the renovation of
shelters for the victims of abuse, conducted under the theme "Homes of Hope in
16 days."
During this year's campaign the department is starting with five shelters
and will continue to look for partnerships to renovate the remaining 11 until
the next campaign.
Housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane said this initiative illustrates that while
the department's core business is to build houses, it cares about the plight of
the abused.
"We cannot turn a blind eye on the plight of our women and children who
often suffer abuse. They need to be housed in a conducive environment where
they are safe. I hope this gesture will go a long a way in restoring the
dignity of the victims and heal their pain," said Mokonyane.
The department has identified at least 16 shelters throughout the province
that need urgent attention. The department will continue to engage stakeholders
in ensuring that this project is not a once-off project.
Mokonyane says the campaign will not only create awareness about abuse, but
will also raise funds for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that take care
of abused women and children.
The MEC said government alone cannot eliminate the act of violence against
women and children as this affects everyone in society.
"I would like to acknowledge the effort by the private sector who decided to
heed our call and join the efforts of uplifting and restoring people's dignity.
Through participating in this campaign, we show that we do care about creating
violence free communities and families," said Mokonyane.
