Gauteng Housing on annual report

Gauteng Housing presents oversight report

4 December 2007

The Gauteng Department of Housing has delivered 40 000 housing units by the
end of September this year.

Gauteng MEC for Housing, Nomvula Mokonyane told this to members of the
Gauteng Legislature during her presentation of an oversight report on the
annual report for 2006/07 financial year today.

The Department has received an unqualified report from the Auditor-General.
The report indicates there is considerable effort at all levels to improve the
financial management capability of the department.

"We remain committed to improving the challenges raised in the annual report
and ensure that all our efforts are dedicated towards the improvement of the
quality of life of our people," said Mokonyane.

She said the department is currently implementing a programme to deal with
the issues raised by the housing committee in its report including its
recommendations.

In the last financial year the department has been able to provide 32 176
serviced stands with water and sanitation and also completed 44 868 houses
thereby benefiting over 223 000 households.

To cater for those who do not want to be permanent residents and those who
do not qualify for the subsidy, the department managed to complete 2 165 rental
units across the province.

During the reporting financial year, the department was allocated R2 171 717
billion and managed to spend R2 137 278 which translates to 98,4 percent of the
allocated funds.

"It is against this figure that I can affirm our commitment towards
delivering services to the beloved people of this province," said
Mokonyane.

She added that the department is supplementing brick and mortar in the
delivery of houses, by exploring alternative building technologies. This will
offer a range of housing choices to beneficiaries and in the process providing
a visual change to the face of affordable housing in Gauteng.

Currently there are two pilot projects being implemented in Nomzamo where
468 houses are to be built and in Kaalfontein Ext 22 with 887 house units.
