The Department will host a gala evening to honour women who, through
agriculture, have been in the forefront of fighting poverty, creating jobs and
have contributed to the development of the agricultural sector.
This event, taking place ten days before the announcement of participants
and winners of the 2006 Gauteng Provincial Female Farmer of the Year, is also
aimed at encouraging more participation of women in Government projects,
especially those aimed at empowering women.
The Gauteng Female Farmer of the Year project, which started in 1999, has
reached over 1 800 women farmers in Gauteng alone. Some of the participants in
the provincial project have moved on to win national honours. Ms Rindie
Scheepers won the 2000 National Markets category and the Mofolo Food Garden won
the 2004 Best Household Use Category.
This gala evening will take place as follows:
