Heritage Day
5 September 2006
The Gauteng Provincial Government invites everyone to celebrate Heritage Day
on Sunday, 24 September 2006, at Maropeng in Mogale City.
The theme for this year is 'Celebrating our Music, Our Heritage from Kwela
to Kwaito'.
South Africa has a wealth of musical tradition. During the struggle for
political freedom music served as a powerful tool for the voice of South
African people to be heard across the world.
Music became a powerful statement of identity and today South Africa has a
rich tradition of music that ranges from Kwela to Kwaito. There is something
for everyone. Similarly on the 24th of September, the day will be filled with
activities for the whole family.
Top South African musicians, craft exhibitors, jumping castles, face
painting and traditional games are just some of the activities that will be
happening at Maropeng on Heritage Day. Maropeng is the new state-of-the-art
visitors' facility in the Cradle of Humankind world heritage site.
The centre is designed to help tourists, schoolchildren and others explore
the rich fossil heritage of the area and offers interactive displays,
restaurants, a market place, an outdoor amphitheatre and a hotel. The visitor's
centre will open its doors free of charge to the public on the day!
The Gauteng Provincial Government will be hosting the day's proceedings in
partnership with the West Rand District Municipality.
For more information regarding the bus pick-up points call the Department of
Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation on (011) 355 2500.
