Gauteng to host Economic Opportunities Roadshow during Imbizo Focus
Week, 25 to 26 Oct

Gauteng brings economic opportunities to Magaliesburg
residents

21 October 2007

The Gauteng Provincial Government and other stakeholders will conduct an
Economic Opportunities Roadshow on 25 and 26 October 2007 at Magaliesburg Civic
Centre, Magaliesburg, in the Mogale City local municipality area, where the
community will be advised on and informed about economic opportunities
available to them.

The keynote address at the Economic Opportunities Roadshow will be delivered
by the Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Barbara Creecy, and
several senior government officials, Members of Mayoral Committee (MMCs) and
councillors will attend the event.

Details of the roadshow are as follows:
Date: Thursday, 25 and Friday, 26 October 2007
Time: 10h00
Venue: Magaliesburg Civic Centre

Presentations will be made by representatives of the Gauteng Enterprise
Propeller, the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, Gauteng Tourism, the Gauteng Youth
Commission, Gauteng Shared Services Centre, Gauteng Department of Agriculture,
Conservation and the Environment and the national Departments of Labour and
Public Works.

The Economic Opportunities Roadshow will include exhibitions, service desks
and information kiosks aimed at giving local residents information on accessing
government services and economic empowerment options. A training workshop on
how to tender for government contracts will be held on Friday.

The roadshows have already travelled to Sharpeville, Poortjie, Newclare,
Midvaal, Danville, Meadowlands and Thokoza this year, and are aimed at
empowering people with information on income generating opportunities,
tendering, small business support, training, and a variety of other information
that will assist Gauteng residents in benefiting from economic opportunities in
the province.

The roadshows consist of a series of two-day events where government and
government agencies talk directly to residents to empower them on improving
their access to the economy. They are in line with Premier Mbhazima Shilowa's
commitment to promote shared growth and ensure a wider section of Gauteng's
people benefit from the province's economic growth.

As part of its five-year programme, the Gauteng Provincial Government has
committed itself to contribute to halving unemployment and poverty in the
decade leading up to 2014. This entails putting in place measures to stimulate
economic growth.

Most importantly, more people, especially those previously excluded from the
mainstream of the economy, need to have the opportunity to participate in and
benefit from Gauteng's sustained economic growth.

Magaliesburg is on the border of the North West province and is largely a
rural area. There are five informal settlements in the area, namely, Rietpoort,
Buya Africa, GaMogale, Nomashook and Springfarm. The Department of Housing has
built 650 RDP Houses in the area and some residents have received title deeds
to future ownership of the RDP houses.
