Gauteng to host economic opportunities roadshow, 28 to 29 Jun

Gauteng brings economic opportunities to West Rand
residents

27 June 2007

The Gauteng Provincial Government and other stakeholders will on Thursday,
28 and Friday, 29 June 2007 conduct an economic opportunities roadshow in
Munsieville in the Mogale City Local Municipal area in the West Rand.

The keynote address at the Economic Opportunities Roadshow will be delivered
by the Deputy Director General in the Gauteng Department of Economic
Development, Siphiwe Ngwenya, and several senior government officials, MMCs and
councillors will attend the event.

Presentations will be made by representatives of the Gauteng Enterprise
Propeller, the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, Gauteng Tourism, the Gauteng Youth
Commission, Gauteng Shared Services Centre, Gauteng Department of Agriculture,
Conservation and the Environment and the national Departments of Labour and
Public Works.

The Economic Opportunities Roadshow will include exhibitions, service desks
and information kiosks aimed at giving local residents information on accessing
government services and economic empowerment options. A training workshop on
how to tender for government contracts will be held on Friday.

Details of the roadshow are as follows:
Date: Thursday, 28 June and Friday, 29 June 2007
Time: 10h00
Venue: Munsieville Taxi Rank Open Ground

The roadshow, which has already travelled to Sharpeville, Poortjie, Newclare
and Midvaal this year, is aimed at empowering people with information on income
generating opportunities, tendering, small business support, training, and a
variety of other information that will assist Gauteng residents in benefiting
from economic opportunities in the province.

The roadshows consists of a series of two day events where government and
government agencies talk directly to residents to empower them on improving
their access to the economy. The roadshows are in line with Premier Mbhazima
Shilowa's commitment to promote shared growth and ensure a wider section of
Gauteng's people benefit from the province's economic growth.

As part of its five-year programme, the Gauteng Provincial Government has
committed itself to contribute to halving unemployment and poverty in the
decade leading up to 2014. This entails putting in place measures to stimulate
economic growth.

Most importantly, more people, especially those previously excluded from the
mainstream of the economy, need to have the opportunity to participate in and
benefit from Gauteng's sustained economic growth.

Munsieville is a township to the north west of Krugersdorp in Mogale City.
The area was established in 1911 and is one of the oldest townships in the West
Rand.

In addition to the old township houses, about 600 houses were built in
Extension 2 and 4. An informal settlement north west of Munsieville and a
hostel accommodating 200 occupants provide more shelter.

Currently, a housing project for 270 units is underway in the Horse Shoe
area as part of the Munsieville Renewal Programme and other portions of land
north of the area are identified for housing.

While unemployment remains a serious challenge in the area, entrepreneurship
is flourishing and there are a number of small businesses in the area.
