The Gauteng Provincial Government and other stakeholders will tomorrow,
Thursday, 27 and Friday, 28 September 2007 conduct an Economic Opportunities
Road show in Thokoza in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality area, where
the community will be advised on and informed about economic opportunities
available to them.
The keynote address at the Economic Opportunities Road show will be
delivered by the Gauteng MEC for Health, Brian Hlongwa, and several senior
government officials, MMCs and councillors will attend the event.
Details of the road show are as follows:
Date: Thursday, 27 September and Friday, 28 September 2007
Time: 10h00
Venue: Thokoza Auditorium Hall, Khumalo Street, Thokoza
Presentations will be made by representatives of the Gauteng Enterprise
Propeller, the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, Gauteng Tourism, the Gauteng Youth
Commission, Gauteng Shared Services Centre, Gauteng Department of Agriculture,
Conservation and the Environment and the national Departments of Labour and
Public Works.
The Economic Opportunities Road show will include exhibitions, service desks
and information kiosks aimed at giving local residents information on accessing
government services and economic empowerment options. A training workshop on
how to tender for government contracts will be held on Friday.
The road shows have already travelled to Sharpeville, Poortjie, Newclare,
Midvaal and Danville this year, and are aimed at empowering people with
information on income generating opportunities, tendering, small business
support, training, and a variety of other information that will assist Gauteng
residents in benefiting from economic opportunities in the province.
The road shows consist of a series of two day events where government and
government agencies talk directly to residents to empower them on improving
their access to the economy. The road shows are in line with Premier Mbhazima
Shilowa's commitment to promote shared growth and ensure a wider section of
Gauteng's people benefit from the province's economic growth.
As part of its five-year programme, the Gauteng Provincial Government has
committed itself to contribute to halving unemployment and poverty in the
decade leading up to 2014. This entails putting in place measures to stimulate
economic growth.
Most importantly, more people, especially those previously excluded from the
mainstream of the economy, need to have the opportunity to participate in and
benefit from Gauteng's sustained economic growth.
Thokoza is in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, ten kilometres away
from Alberton, adjacent to Katlehong. It was established in 1973 and together
with Katlehong it forms the second biggest township after Soweto.
Earlier this month the Gauteng Department of Housing handed over houses to
pensioners at Eden Park Extension 5 in Ekurhuleni as part of a R58 million
housing project which will provide 2519 units, and 115 units of bonded
houses.
A R25 million high density housing project was also launched in Tsakane
Extension 17 earlier this month by the provincial Department of Housing, and is
aimed at addressing the unavailability of land for housing developments in
Ekurhuleni.
