Gauteng to hold mini soccer world cup, 26 – 27 May

Eldorado Park to host Mini World Cup

25 May 2006

About 200 primary schools from Soweto, Orange Farm, Lenasia, Ennerdale,
Eldorado Park, Kliprivier Valley and the southern suburbs of Johannesburg will
participate in the Mini World Cup Tournament this weekend.

The tournament is organised by the Gauteng Department of Education in
partnership with the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and
Recreation and the Joburg South District and aims to promote mass participation
in sporting activities and identifying young talent in the province.

The tournament will be held at Cavendish Primary School in Eldorado Park on
Friday 26 May and Saturday 27 May.

The Mini World Cup, last held in Lenasia in 2002, takes the format of the
Fifa World Cup tournament. The 2002 tournament was won by Donaldson Primary
School from Orlando.

Each participating school has been allocated a name of one of the countries
taking part in the 2006 Germany World Cup and the fixture list mirrors the
World Cup groups to create a realistic atmosphere for the participants. It is a
six-a-side game for the 11 years and under age group.

The Mini World cup is not just about goals, guts and glory. The education
department is also using this opportunity to educate learners about the
different cultures and countries participating. “Sport has played a major role
in building bridges amongst our communities and this event will assist in
realizing our vision for a better South Africa,” said district sports
co-ordinator Agsie Pillay.

The opening ceremony of the Mini World Cup will be held tomorrow (26 May
2006) at Extension 6 Grounds in Eldorado Park and the games will begin shortly
after the ceremony.

Participants will receive commemorative certificates and medals at the
closing ceremony.
