Gauteng Health unveils AIDS response

Gauteng response to AIDS to be unveiled

28 November 2006

The Gauteng AIDS Council will today, Tuesday November 28, kick-off the 2006
World Aids Day campaign with a media briefing to unveil the Provincial response
to the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

The campaign will culminate in a door-to-door education campaign in various
communities throughout the province on Friday, 1 December.

About 12 000 volunteers including celebrities and religious activists are
expected to go door-to-door to speak to people about HIV. Under the theme:
'Turning talk into action' the volunteers will spread the message of
prevention, comprehensive health care and support for children affected by the
disease. They will also inform communities about the importance of positive
human and social values in dealing with HIV and AIDS.

Dr Liz Floyd, Director of the Gauteng Health Department Multi-Sectoral AIDS
Unit said face to face interaction is the best form of communication. "It gives
people an opportunity to probe and ask questions," said Dr Floyd.

She lamented the fact that most people know about the danger of HIV and AIDS
but are not taking the necessary measures to protect themselves. "Now is the
time to turn our thinking and talking into joint and practical action to
address the challenge of HIV and AIDS," Dr Floyd said.

All media are invited to attend the briefing.
