into Kalafong Hospital attack
20 July 2006
The Gauteng Department of Health has finalised a preliminary investigation
into the attack of three visitors at Kalafong Hospital, in Tshwane.
The investigation has indicated that the incident happened outside the
hospital premises and the hospital security personnel's intervention assisted
to bring the situation under control.
The area where the incident took place is a waiting area where visitors wait
before being allowed into the hospital grounds and measures were taken to
assure the security of visitors.
The safety of patients and health professionals was not threatened by the
incident.
The department can also confirm that the alleged assailant was previously
admitted for a psychosis (mental condition) caused by dagga smoking. He was
treated and was discharged two weeks ago after responding positively to
treatment.
At the time of this attack he was not a hospital patient.
The department regrets the unforeseen incident and reassures the public that
adequate measures are always taken to prevent such incidents in hospitals.
The department refutes claims that the hospital does not have money to
employ more security personnel. The hospital employed three new security
personnel at the beginning of this month and the department has appointed a
senior security manager to strengthen security in all health facilities.
