Gauteng Health on Extreme Drug Resistance Tuberculosis

More Extreme Drug Resistance Tuberculosis (XDR-TB) cases
confirmed in Gauteng

26 September 2006

Following rigorous testing of multi-drug resistance TB (MDR-TB) patients,
the Gauteng Health Department has confirmed six cases of XDR-TB in Gauteng.
Three of these patients are already receiving medical care at Sizwe Tropical
Disease Hospital. The department is in the process of tracing the other three
patients.

All hospitals, clinics and health practitioners in Gauteng were advised
earlier in the month to increase their vigilance in the monitoring and
treatment of TB cases to detect the occurrence of Extreme Drug Resistant TB.
The Gauteng Department of Health, once again, gives the assurance that every
possible step is being implemented to ensure the early detection of XDR-TB and
to safeguard the health of the people of Gauteng.
