Gauteng Health to commemorate World TB day, 15 Mar

World Stop TB Day

8 March 2007

This year's World TB Day commemorations will highlight significant progress
which the Gauteng Department of Health (DOH) has made in curbing the spread of
tuberculosis in the province. The celebration will also acknowledge various
role-players who have contributed immensely in the fight against the
disease.

TB remains a major challenge in the public health care system and this is
exacerbated by the prevalence of HIV and AIDS.

At the World TB Day in March last year a National TB Crisis Plan was
launched. This was followed by a TB crisis plan which was piloted by the
Johannesburg Metro Council.

Since then the cure rate has improved from 62% to about 72% and the number
of patients defaulting from treatment has decrease from 12% to 7.7%.

In an effort to consolidate these gains and strengthen our effort against TB
the Gauteng DOH and its stakeholders will embark on a door-to-door campaign
calling on all the people to support World TB Day and give a helping hand in
the fight against this scourge.

The theme for the 2007 campaign is 'TB anywhere, is TB everywhere'.

Media is invited to attend.
