Leaders of the African Indigenous Churches (AIC) in partnership with the
Gauteng Department of Health will host a Mass Prayer Rally at Johannesburg
Stadium on 24 February 2007.
Leaders from St John Church of Prophecy, St Paul Apostolic Church, Nazareth
Baptist Church (Shembe) and other African indigenous churches have joined
forces to fight against AIDS.
Under the theme "Africa prays for answers on AIDS," the aim of the rally is
to deepen understanding of HIV and AIDS and to encourage the spirit of care and
love without discrimination amongst faith-based communities.
"As church leaders, we would like to see our sector become a force for
change working towards educating communities on moral values, self-love and
instilling the spirit of Ubuntu," said Archbishop Raymond Mothapa, spokesperson
for the leaders organising the event.
The rally forms part of the Gauteng Department of Health's on-going "Turn
Talk into Action against HIV and AIDS" campaign which kicked off last year. The
Director of the Multi-Sectoral AIDS Unit, Dr Elizabeth Floyd, welcomes the
efforts of the African Indigenous Churches and other religious formations to
help in the fight against AIDS. "Faith-based organisations (FBOs) are our
partners in the Gauteng AIDS programme which plays a key role in providing
support for families affected by AIDS," she said.
The programme for the day will include performances by Deborah Fraser,
William Mthethwa and Sechaba. Choirs from the various churches as well as brass
brands will also form part of the day's events.
The details of the event will be as follows:
Date: Saturday, 24 February 2007
Time: 09h00 until 18h00
