The Gauteng Executive Council meeting today received a report on the
proposed monorail project from the MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works,
Ignatius Jacobs.
The Executive Council accepted that there was no malice in the announcement
by MEC Jacobs and MEC for Finance and Economic Affairs Paul Mashatile about a
private sector proposal to establish a monorail in Gauteng or the oversight in
not consulting with the Minister of Transport on this matter.
The Executive expressed its satisfaction with the discussions held amongst
the Minister of Transport and the two MECs on the outcomes of the meeting. The
Executive agreed that further work would be undertaken on the proposal
including the further development of the business case for the project, which
would be presented to the Minister of Transport.
In addition, the provincial government in consultation with the relevant
stakeholders will further explore the possible integration of monorail projects
as part of the broader public transport system and integrated transport plan
for the Gauteng city region. The Executive tasked the Gautrain Political
Committee to address these matters over the next few months. The Gautrain
Political Committee is chaired by the MEC for Finance and Economic Affairs and
also includes the MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works, the MEC for Local
Government and top provincial government officials.
The Executive Council also wished Tukkies luck in the first leg of the
playoffs for the National First Division Platinum in Tshwane tonight.
