Gauteng education finances shine for 4th time in a row

24 November 2006

Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has managed to achieve a fourth
successful unqualified financial report from the Auditor General.

This was disclosed by the MEC for Education Angie Motshekga at the Gauteng
Provincial Legislature in delivering the department's annual report after a
report tabled by the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

"This means we have managed to spend public funds appropriately," said
Motshekga.

The Department has also successfully reduced issues of emphasis identified
by the Auditor General from 20 in 2004/5 to 8 in the current year of
review.

Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) however, noted that the
department managed to overspend by R22 million to fund Adult Basic Education
and Training.

"We welcome the endorsement of our over-expenditure by SCOPA and commit
ourselves to ensure that we minimise future over expenditures," said
Motshekga.
