MEC for Education, Angie Motshekga, participated in the Teaching Session
which was part of the launch of Operation HOPE at the Cida City Campus on
Wednesday, 6 June 2007. Operation HOPE is a United States (US) based financial
education and empowerment non-profit organisation (NPO) that will launch a $1
million (about seven billion rand) to recruit, train and mobilise more than 250
local professional HOPE Corps volunteers to empower 50 000 South African youth
and young adults in financial literacy, dignity and entrepreneurship.
Operation HOPE's Banking on our future programme is designed to empower
youth to become financially literate and develop life skills to take control of
their financial future. "We are humbled, yet proud to be actively involved in
Operation Hope's Banking on the future project in South Africa because it
brings hope in a country that has already brought so much hope to the world
with its miracle transition, a transition that shows that dignity can be within
reach of ordinary people," said President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO),
Citi Foundation, Pam Flaherty.
The launch included an executive teaching session, with the participation of
MEC Motshekga; US Ambassador Eric M Bost; Cida University CEO Taddy Blecher;
former US Ambassador Andrew Young, Operation HOPE Founder, Chairman, and CEO
John Hope Bryant; Donna Oosthuyse, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Citi Africa
Division; Eva Bakonyi, International Finance Corporation; Tina Eboka of
Standard Bank and Mampe Ntsedi of the Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation.
At the core of HOPE's mission to eradicate poverty and empower the
wealthless to establish "Silver Rights" or the right to financial literacy,
access to capital, technology, and equality of opportunity for the underserved.
This vision corresponds with the Gauteng Department of Education's vision of
promoting dynamic citizenship for socio-economic growth and development for
Gauteng and South Africa.
