Gauteng Community Safety on Operation Iron Fist

Operation Iron Fist

8 January 2007

On 11 July 2006 the MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng, Mr Firoz Cachalia,
launched Operation Iron Fist. This policing strategy was aimed at intensifying
policing to respond to a spike in certain crimes that had been apparent from
April 2006. The 6 months period ends on 11 January 2007. A detailed evaluation
is being undertaken to identify the successes of the operation and to establish
what challenges still need to be overcome. This process will allow for
necessary changes to be identified and implemented in follow-up operations.

In line with the MECs commitment to give the public feedback on the impact
of the operation, the MEC will convene a press conference towards the end of
this month to inform the public about the outcome of iron Fist. We will
continue to improve our capacity to tackle crime in Gauteng until we are
confident that our communities are demonstrably safer.
