Gauteng to celebrate International Day of Disabled
Persons

26 November 2007

The Gauteng Provincial Government will celebrate the International Day of
Disabled Persons on Sunday, 2 December 2007, under the theme "Making Gauteng a
better place for people with disabilities".

The day is celebrated annually on 3 December, and is aimed to promote an
understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights
and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase
awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with
disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural
life.

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) remains committed to ensuring that
it meets its target of increasing the number of people with disabilities
employed within the provincial government to two percent by 2009.

An advocacy plan to address the needs of people with disabilities by
implementing the national disability strategy and Gauteng disability policy has
been vigorously pursued in recent months and the GPG is conscious of the
importance of skills development, access to resources and creating equal
opportunities in the labour market to allow people with disabilities to compete
for employment.

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and MEC for Social Development Kgaogelo
Lekgoro and a host of dignitaries are expected to attend.
