Gauteng Agriculture, Conservation and Environment to launch agricultural
development strategy, 22 Feb

Delegates to discuss, endorse agricultural development
strategy

20 February 2006

More than 800 people, representing local communities and urban agricultural
organisations, will gather in Sebokeng to discuss and endorse the Gauteng
Agricultural Development Strategy (GADS).

The GADS, endorsed by the Gauteng Provincial Executive Council in November
2005, is a comprehensive operational plan aimed at optimising output of urban
agriculture in a manner that contributes to job creation, poverty alleviation
and to the further development of the provincial economy.

Priorities identified in this wide-ranging plan include, among others:
* Plans to further improve race and gender patterns in the ownership of
agricultural resources;
* Increased access to local and international markets for urban farmers,
including in the horticulture and floriculture markets;
* Improved food security levels particularly at household level; and
* To encourage creation of more sustainable jobs in the agricultural
sector.

The development of GADS is informed by, among others, inputs made at the
Gauteng Provincial Agricultural Summit, held in November 2004 and the
Provincial Land Summit held in June 2005.

The launch of the GADS will take place as follows:
