The Northern Capeâs Acting Premier Archie Lucas will on Thursday, 3 August
2006, bestow the honours on the provinceâs best female farmers in the
prestigious Female Farmer of the Year Competition Awards ceremony at
Colesburgâs Blue Moon Hall. Acting Premier Lucas will be joined by event
sponsor representatives Standard Bank, Griekwaland-Wes Co-operative (GWK), Try
Me International, ABSA, Land Bank, Total South Africa, Onderstepoort Biological
Products and Bayer Health Care, in announcing the winners and giving messages
of support.
A staggering prize-money of over R120 000 is at stake for this yearâs
provincial winners who would be competing in four categories: top producer for
national markets, top producer for informal markets, top producer for household
food security and top producer for export markets.
South Africaâs reigning Female Farmer of the Year, Ms Colene Grievelink of
Hanover will offer words of encouragement to this yearâs participants. Also
present to grace the occasion would be the National Informal Market winner Ms
Felicity Fillis of De Aar who is best remembered for having sold her dining
room suite to buy ostrich chicks.
Over 300 invitees from the land and agrarian sector have been invited to
this glittering event that is staged to recognise and encourage womenâs
contribution to the fight against poverty and sound entrepreneurship. The
Female Farmer of the Year Competition Awards is one of the key events of the
Northern Cape Governmentâs Womenâs Month activities. Since the inception of the
Competition in 1999, its previous winners have risen in this male dominated
sector. Hence the winners would at all times display the following
characteristics:
* Demonstrate a degree of innovation and creativity in improving existing
farming systems with the responsible use of production inputs.
* Demonstrate a sense of innovation in financial management, created and
retained employment opportunities.
