meeting of Experts on Public Administration
24 March 2006
The Minister for Public Service and Administration, Ms Geraldine
Fraser-Moleketi, will attend the fifth session of the United Nations Committee
of Experts on Public Administration to be held at the United Nations (UN)
Headquarters in New York, from 27 to 31 March 2006.
The experts committee was established in 2001 to provide strategic advice in
the area of public administration to the UN's Economic and Social Council,
Member States and the Secretariat. The sessions of the committee are also
attended by observers and representatives from intergovernmental,
nongovernmental and academic institutions.
Minister Fraser-Moleketi, a member of the Committee of Experts, will take
part in a discussion on âInnovations in governance and public administration
for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals include the
millennium development goalsâ.
Other items on the agenda will include discussions on âsearching for a
bottom up approach and methodologies for developing foundations and principles
of sound public administration, review of the UN activities on public
administration and compendium of basic terminology in governance and public
administration.â
The previous session of the committee, held in April 2005 noted among other
things that the strengthening of institutions of governance will have a
âpositive effect on integrity, transparency and accountability, which in turn
improves policy options, service delivery and human securityâ.
The committee also noted that âthe bureaucratic aspects of public
administration should be contrasted with the engagement of citizens and the
promotion of good governance, which in turn are core elements of the challenge
to achieve the required revitalisationâ.
