Recreation Programme
20 October 2006
The Free State Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will be embarking on a
number of activities to advance the programme of Sport and Recreation in the
province. Three main events under the Sport and Recreation Programme will be
taking place this financial year.
The first activity is the Active Senior Citizens Programme that will target
the elderly people in the five districts of the province. The objective of the
programme is to actively engage the senior citizens in sport and recreational
activities. This programme will run under the theme "Active Senior Citizens Do
Make a Difference." The district events will culminate into a provincial event
that will be held in Bloemfontein. The event is hosted in partnership with the
Departments of Social Development and Health.
The second activity will be the Sport and Recreation Roles and
Responsibilities workshop that will be hosted in the Xhariep district. This
will involve the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture; the Department of
Education; Free State Sport and Recreation Council; Free State Academy of
Sport; and Sport Councillors in the municipalities. The objective of the
workshop is to identify and strengthen roles and responsibilities of
stakeholders with regard to service delivery.
The Free State Province is to host a major sporting event in December 2006
in the form of Inter-Provincial Games. This event is to see various sport teams
from participating provinces taking part in a number of sporting codes and
indigenous games in the Free State. This an annual event organised as a joint
venture with the Department of Local Government and Housing with the aim of
improving inter-governmental relations using sport as a vehicle.
