14 June 2006
The Free State Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, through Mmabana
Cultural Centre, are collaborating with the University of Venda Music
Department in hosting âCultural Dialoguesâ from 24 June to 26 June 2006. This
will be a combination of performances as well as workshops hosted at Mmabana
Cultural Centre in Thaba Nchu.
These âCultural Dialoguesâ and workshops will be facilitated by staff from
both Institutions. The spotlight will be on students on the afternoon of
Saturday, 24 June 2006 from both institutions who will render their
performances. They will be complemented by a list which will include some of
South Africaâs music legends such as Jeff Mapaya, Joe Malinga, George Mugovhani
and Andile Yenana from the University of Venda as well as Noel Khumalo, Joseph
Matlabe and Mpho Maboe from the Cultural Centre and this music spectacular will
be free of charge. On the evening of the same day, the team will continue the
music celebration at Club E situated on the corner of Charles and West Burger
Streets in Bloemfontein.
The University of Venda Music Department will bring a package of performers
in contemporary and jazz music as well as classical and choral music that will
blend with the Mmabana Music Unit as well as the traditional dancers. Some of
the students from the University include performers who will continue their
journey to the Annual Standard Bank Grahamstown Youth Jazz Festival while
others will be heading this side solely for the performance at Mmabana. There
is also another group which will direct much focus on a learnership which will
focus on arts and culture facilitation at the Centre as well as from the Free
State Provincial Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
The workshop which takes place on Monday, 26 June will tackle issues such as
the following:
* managing arts and culture centres
* human resources management
* finance and budgeting for arts and culture institutions
* events co-ordination.
