Candlelight memorial event in remembrance of those who have
died because of HIV and AIDS

29 August 2007

The Department of Correctional Services, Free State and Northern Cape
Region, will be commemorating the candlelight ceremony in partnership with the
Xhariep Municipality and the Free State Department of Health.

Department of Correctional Services (DCS) have in its care offenders and
officials infected and affected with HIV and AIDS, who come from different
communities and municipal districts. The Community Health facilities as well as
the DCS have started with the provision of antiretrovirals to the eligible
infected people, but despite the efforts made, we still have people dying of
HIV and AIDS related illnesses.

It is against this background that the department, Free State and Northern
Cape Region, Goedemoed Management Area, jointly with the Xhariep District AIDS
Council, want to join the world in commemorating the candle lighting
ceremony.

It is on this day that we are going to remember all who died of AIDS related
illness, strengthen all those who are living with HIV and AIDS, acknowledge all
the caregivers in their difficult task of looking after the infected and give
hope to all infected and affected.
