The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Firoz Cachalia, will today, 5 April
2006, visit the Kagiso Police Station on the West Rand in the wake of multiple
murders by a police detective stationed at the same police station.
The shootings reportedly took place on Monday night (3 April) when a
detective shot and killed three women and a 12-month old baby, injuring another
woman in the process. The police officer allegedly proceeded to Kagiso Police
Station where he killed four of his colleagues.
The MEC has expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased.
Expressing shock at the murders, Cachalia said this was no ordinary crime. "It
is very unusual and disconcerting. The loss of eight lives is very
upsetting".
The MEC will visit the Kagiso Police Station to get a full briefing on the
incident and render his support to the members of the police service at the
station.
