A Erwin on Ink Political Champions' visit

Statement by Minister Alec Erwin at the Ink Political
Champions' visit

8 November 2007

Since inception in 2001, the Urban Renewal Programme continues to gain
momentum. The progress made in the Inanda Ntuzuma and Kwamashu (Ink) node over
the past year alone is indeed commendable.

The projects we have visited today, such as the Bridge City area and the
Community Safety Centre, are vital interventions to support the advancement of
these areas, and to create more opportunities for employment and skills
development among members of these communities, in an environment that is
safe.

Investing in our children's education ensures that we build a strong
foundation upon which the growth of our economy can occur. It is important that
parents, teachers, local business, as well as the community at large, take a
keen interest in the education and training of our young people, who will lead
this country one day.

It is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that delivery takes
place, so that we can improve the quality of life of all residents in the Ink
node. The importance of strengthening partnerships between the three spheres of
government, as well as all the communities involved, cannot be underestimated,
if these projects being undertaken here are to thrive.

The successful completion of all scheduled projects, at the specified time,
is crucial if we are to live up to government's promise of ensuring a better
life for all South Africans.
