Shaping the future Of Aquaculture in South Africa

Thursday, 21 September 2006: The Department of Environmental Affairs and
Tourism, as the lead agent for Marine Aquaculture in South Africa, will be
hosting a National Aquaculture workshop in Cape Town on Tuesday, 26 September
2006.

Following the last workshop that was hosted by the department in October
1999 that stimulated the policy formulation process, the planned workshop for
Tuesday is designed to provide a platform for the exchange of information on
the policy formulation process, as well as to provide a unique opportunity for
networking among the major role players.

The detailed workshop objectives are:

* to assess the role of aquaculture in achieving government priorities
* to review challenges and opportunities presented by aquaculture
development
* to improve co-operative governance and stakeholder relations.

Leading experts and key speakers representing government policy makers,
researchers and industry will stimulate discussions through talks on the
current and future status in the industry.

The workshop process is envisaged to feed into the finalisation of South
Africa's policy on Aquaculture.
