Environmental Affairs and Tourism on oysters in Goukou River
Estuary

Department cautions public not to collect and eat oysters in
the Goukou River Estuary in Still Bay

7 September 2007

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism is cautioning members of
the public not to collect and consume dead oysters that have washed up in large
numbers in the Goukou River Estuary in the Still Bay area, Western Cape.

The departmental inspectors working in that area together with Cape Nature
officials have confirmed reports of oysters being washed out in the estuary for
the past few days.

The oysters will be sampled by marine scientists to determine the cause of
mortality. The department therefore cautions members of the public not to
collect and eat dead oysters washed out in the estuary until the research
sampling has been completed. The sampling is expected to be completed within a
week.
