Electoral Commission on municipal by-elections

Municipal by-elections scheduled for 28 March 2007

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), Mr Mosotho Moepya, said today, 26 March that municipal ward by-elections
will take place in Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and North
West on Wednesday, 28 March 2007.

A total of 24 candidates, representing 10 political parties, will contest
seven vacant wards. In the Free State, Ward 6 in Kopanong, Trompsburg, FS162
will be contested by Olehile Johannes Motaung of the African Christian
Democratic Party, Moramang Pieter Mafata of the African National Congress and
Tshotleho Freek Blom of the Democratic Alliance.

In Gauteng, Ward 23 in Emfuleni Vereeniging, GT421 will be contested by
Stefan Groenewald of the Action Labour Party of South Africa, Hendriena
Magrietha Visser of the African Christian Alliance, Mlungisi Steven Gumede of
the African Christian Democratic Party, Mabuti Bennet Bikitsha of the African
National Congress and Hluphekile Kate Radebe of the Pan Africanist Congress of
Azania.

Two by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:

Ward 6 in uPhongolo, Pongola, KZN262 will be contested by Vusumuzi Gibson
Masuku of the African National Congress and Ndukisebandla Petros Mavuso of the
Inkatha Freedom Party; and in Ward 16, Umhlathuze, Richards Bay KZN282, the
candidates are Bhekithemba Amos Mthiyane of the African Christian Democratic
Party, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Madonsela of the African National Congress, Edward
Mkize of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Lindiwe Nellie Biyela of the National
Democratic Convention.

Two by-elections will also take place in Mpumalanga:

In Ward 13, Emalahleni, Witbank, MP312 will be contested Johannes Ben Mabena
of the African Christian Democratic Party, Selby Gusteve Mkhwanazi of the
African National Congress, Ngwamawete Caroline Soana of the Azanian Peoples'
Organisation, Marriam Mathiri Mahlangu of the Democratic Alliance and Maria
Batazi Vilane of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania; while Ward 21 in
Bushbuckridge, Bushbuckridge, MP325 will be contested by Smart John Sambo of
the African National Congress and Makanele Vusi Mathebula of the Pan Africanist
Congress of Azania.

In North West, Ward 3 in Matlosana, Klerksdorp, NW403 will be contested by
Johannes Peter Hamman of the African Christian Democratic Party, Lucas Moepi
Mothibedi of the African National Congress and Serah Agnus van Wyk of the
United Christian Democratic Party.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 36 742 voters
are registered in the seven wards (40 voting districts) where by-elections will
be taking place.
