The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC),
Mosotho Moepya, said today, 29 October that municipal ward by-elections will
take place in the KwaZulu-Natal and North West on Wednesday, 31 October
2007.
A total of 11 candidates will contest five (vacant wards. One is an
independent candidate while the rest represent three political parties.
Altogether four by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal.
* Ward 6 in Umtshezi (Estcourt) Municipality â KZN234, will be contested by
Themba Absolom Xaba of the African National Congress and Simon Nyanda Mchunu of
the Inkatha Freedom Party. The seat was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom
Party and the vacancy occurred due to the resignation of the councillor.
* Ward 1 in Umvoti (Greytown) Municipality â KZN245, will be contested by
Sibongiseni Anthony Nzama of the African National Congress and Bonginkosi David
Shange of the Inkatha Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the
African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the
councillor.
* Ward 4 in Nkandla (Nkandla) Municipality â KZN286, will be contested by
Phakamani Douglas Mthombeni, an independent candidate, Nyezi Zephania Mkhize of
the African National Congress and Phakanani Maxwell Khanyile of the Inkatha
Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party
and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
* Ward 13 in Umzimkhulu (Umzimkulu) Municipality â KZN435, will be contested by
Kayalethu Edgar Tobela of the African National Congress and Monde Sigaqa of the
Inkatha Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African
National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
In North West, Ward 12 in Ramotshere Moiloa (Zeerust) Municipality â NW385
will be contested by Kelebogile Magdeline Lerakong of the African National
Congress and Keontse Bertha Letile of the United Christian Democratic Party.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became
vacant due to the death of the councillor.
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 18 245 voters
are registered in the five wards, 22 voting districts, where by-elections will
be taking place.
