Contrary to a press statement released today by the Democratic Alliance, the
Department of Education spent less on its budget vote functions in 2006 than in
2005.
In its answer to a parliamentary question asking for the cost of the budget
functions in 2006, the Department of Education included all the transport costs
of staff, who set up an education exhibition in Parliament, and the cost of the
exhibition materials as well.
In fact the Department of Education spent less on post-debate functions in
2006 than in 2005. In 2005 the Department spent R47 750 on the post-debate
function in the National Assembly and R44 700 on the post-debate function in
the NCOP, making a total of R92 400.
In 2006 the Department of Education held a function only after the debate in
the National Assembly at a cost of R71 248. No function was held after the
budget vote debate in the NCOP.
This information is contained in the answers to parliamentary questions 839
(2006) and 1312 (2005) available on the Department of Education's web site
