hand over R160 000 to three community projects in Alice
18 August 2006
The SASSA in Eastern Cape region, in partnership with All PAY will hand over
a sum of R160 000 to three community projects in Alice, on 18 August 2006, at
Happy Rest Community Hall at 10h00.
This joint venture has an intension of creating sustainable livelihoods in
order to influence grant recipients not to depend on grants but to mature and
be involved in projects that are going to empower them, and fight poverty,
malnutrition and abuse.
These projects are the results of creative women who focus on gardening,
knitting, sewing and poultry farming. Currently these women operate on a "from
hand to mouth" basis but there are hopes that they will graduate into the
economic sector.
"As government, we say, in addressing the challenges of poverty and
unemployment, government, business community, labour, faith based organisations
and all stakeholders must collectively unite to fight the greatest enemy of all
humanity which is poverty," said Acting Regional Executive Manager, Mr Bandile
Maqetuka.
"We commit ourselves to position SASSA as a world-class institution that
will put the interest of the poor first," he added.
