Eastern Cape Safety and Liaison to promote School Safety programme, 12
to 14 Sept

School Safety Summit resolutions implementation underway

12 September 2007

As from Monday, 10 September 2007, the Eastern Cape Department of Safety and
Liaison in partnership with the JAG Sports and Education Foundation started
visiting schools in the East London and Mdantsane areas to promote the School
Safety Programme.

JAG Sports and Education Foundation were established by Gayton Mckenzie, a
nationally acclaimed former inmate, who wrote a book about his personal
experiences in prison which touched many people in the country.

This initiative comes almost two weeks after the provincial summit on School
Safety held in East London by the Department of Education and the Department of
Safety and Liaison, which adopted the School Safety Programme.

The programme promotes a multi-agency collaboration, which will enable
government and society to win back our schools from the hands of criminals.

The key focus areas of the School Safety Programme are infrastructure,
security control, community mobilisation, conflict management, anti-drug and
substance abuse and school environment, including tendencies of bullying and
other criminal actions. Forty (40) schools have been identified in areas such
as Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City, King Sabata Dalindyebo and Mount Frere for
the pilot phase of the School Safety Programme and will serve as the yardstick
for a successful rollout.
