The Eastern Cape Department of Health's Geriatrics programme that deals with
old people, under the Non-communicable Diseases Unit has been recognised at the
national Department of Health as a province that displays the best performance
in Geriatrics Surgery Rate (treatment and management of older patients) for the
year 2006/07.
The starting point of identifying the best province is to assess the
progress of each province for the specific year with regard to the Geriatrics
programme. Deputy Director for Non-communicable diseases, Ms Xoliswa Mayekiso
says in spite of being short-staffed her unit has managed to win a trophy from
the national department.
She added that, what makes them special is that they are willing to walk
that extra mile and whenever they have workshops they invite nurses from old
age homes who happen to be custodians of the department.
The award is given out annually to provinces to recognise improvement on
Geriatrics Surgery Rate
