Eastern Cape Health on strike action

Government appeals to nurses to return to work

10 June 2007

The Eastern Cape Health Department has appealed to all nurses to return to
their respective work stations. This is despite an earlier contention that it
was business as usual in most state hospitals.

Sizwe Kupelo, the department spokesperson, says the hardest hit hospitals
are Frontier in Queenstown, All Saints at Ngcobo and Mthatha General.

Kupelo says security has been tightened in hospitals where cases of
intimidation were reported.

"We feel now that patients have been abandoned and in the process, denied
their constitutional right," said Kupelo.
