The Eastern Cape Department of Health employees flocked to Komani hospital
grounds to embark on the annual Sports and Recreation tournament on the weekend
of 2 to 4 November 2007.

The tournament, led by Employee Wellness Programme, drew interest to the
majority of sports fanatics that are currently employed by the department. The
games were part of promoting wellness of employees as a healthy mind in a
healthy body enhances productivity to employees.

Head of Employee Wellness Programme, Lulama Matu explained the purpose of
the games emphasising the physical wellness of the employees as a major
objective.

"The games are to enhance health and wellness in the employees through
sport, leading to increase in productivity. Sport is one of the mechanisms that
employees should take part in as it promotes the employees' physical wellness,"
she said.

Ms Matu said through sports and recreation a well balanced work life could
be achieved and this might lead to increase in job performance and high
productivity.

"This tournament will also assist the employees to maintain a balanced work
life in their workplaces," she added.

Out of 22 institutions from around the province, 18 participated in the
tournament, including the head office which participated in the games for the
first time since the games' commencement.

Though the tournament was composed of eleven sports codes, soccer and
netball games drew attention from the spectators with the thrilling encounters
that kept the audience entertained throughout the weekend.

In soccer, head office team was so unlucky and failed to lift the
championship trophy.

They fell behind on the final game of the tournament losing 5-4 on penalty
shootouts to St Lucy's hospital team from Tsolo. The head office surprised the
majority of the teams by winning all the games with big margins. Their first
game was against Zitulele hospital which they ambushed by 9-0. They cruised to
the final game but climbed the ladder against their rivals St Lucy's team. The
excited St Lucy's team rejoiced for the championship and also for being the
first team to defeat the head office team throughout the tournament.

Meanwhile in netball, Taylor's Bequest ladies outplayed all the netball
teams and went to Mount Fletcher with the championship trophy. Their
electrifying final game was against Port Elizabeth complex ladies who also
played very well throughout the tournament but failed to overcome the
aggressive Taylor's Bequest girls.
