Unregistered traditional surgeon Mtshayina Ndoda appeared briefly in the
Libode Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
He was expected to apply for bail, but according to Eastern Cape health
department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo, the matter was postponed to 24 April. Ndoda
had indicated he wanted legal aid, Kupelo said.
He was arrested two weeks ago after evading police for months. Under the
province's circumcision law, no-one is allowed to carry out circumcisions
unless he is registered as a traditional surgeon.
Ndoda is believed to have circumcised almost 300 boys since June last
year.
The department said a number of youths circumcised by Ndoda had died of
complications in the last three years. Kupelo said the department and local
traditional leaders would oppose bail.
