Eastern Cape Health on 2010 World Cup state of readiness

Department presents 2010 state of readiness to Social Needs
Cluster

The Eastern Cape Department of Health made a presentation to the Social
Needs Cluster members on their plans for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup at a
Social Needs Cluster 2010 Blue Print Workshop recently held at the Christian
Centre in East London.

The workshop was honoured by the presence of the Superintendent-General for
the Health Department, Mr L Boya as well as the Head of Sport, Recreation, Arts
and Culture, Mr BT Mfenyana. The purpose of the workshop was to wrap up the
preparations by Social Needs Cluster departments for their state of readiness
to host 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Social Needs Cluster departments which were present at the workshop
comprised by: Health, Sports Recreation, Arts and Culture; Social Development;
Safety and Liaison; Roads and Transport and Education. All the departments made
presentations on their plans and state of readiness on the 2010 Soccer World
Cup.

The Health Department's Chief Operations Officer, Mr PG Zitumane made a
presentation on behalf of the department. On his presentation he mentioned
among other issues, the issue of:

* establishment of a departmental framework that seeks to improve Health
Management System and use 2010 as a vehicle to uplift the standard of service
delivery in the Eastern Cape
* establishment of a provincial health technical task team
* recruitment of more nurses and doctors back to the country and specifically
to the public service
* production of nurses through the Lilitha College of Nursing
* improving of signage in host cities, base camps and en-routes
* creation of sound relations with the private sector
* building of new ambulance bases and improving of the existing ones and many
other issues relating to the 2010 World Cup.

Mr Zitumane also mentioned that the 2010 Fifa World Cup must be leveraged as
a platform to create a sustainable legacy for the integrated health management
system in the province and that the department took a step by employing a 2010
Project Manager.

Departments were given up to the end of November to finish up their final
plans for the cluster to produce the 2010 Soccer World Cup Blue Print.
