Isolated positive cases of classical swine fever (CSF) in Uitenhage, Qumbu
and Lady Frere areas have been confirmed by the Onderstepoort Veterinary
Institute (OVI) laboratory in Pretoria. The affected farms in Uitenhage will be
culled on Saturday, 3 June 2006; the other areas are already being culled. The
estimated number of pigs to be culled is 280 in the Uitenhage area.
The Department of Agriculture would like to confirm that this is not a new
outbreak but a finding as a result of its very strict forward and back tracing
activities. All stakeholders can be assured that the disease is under control
and the campaign is now in its final stages.
Any queries concerning the outbreaks, or if anyone wishes to report any
suspicious cases of CSF, they should contact the Classical Swine Fever Joint
