Hosting an event of that magnitude in Maluti has served a much valuable
contribution towards the expansion of the local environmental awareness
campaign coupled with entertainment and refreshments.

The theme for the day was “An age of hope in a protected environment”.

World Environment Day aim to encourage people to become active supporters of
sustainable living and to promote awareness about the central role that
communities play in changing attitudes towards environmental issues.

On this day, there was a clean–up campaign by 11 Local Schools from Maluti
and Matatiele as well as the announcement of competition results, that is,
posters designed by schools.

and Malubalube. Dignitaries who graced the event included, Senior Manager
Biodiversity Ms Phumla Mzazi who delivered the key note address, Executive
Mayors, officials from the DEAET and provincial departments, other
stakeholders, school children and community at large.

The message for the day was based on the conservation and protection of the
province’s ecologically sensitive natural environment and on sustaining these
precious resources for future generations in partnership with governmental
institutions, civil society, private sectors, donors and global community.

Our province has been blessed with the abundance and richness of natural
resources which we need to protect and enjoy, “for we have not inherited the
environment from our forefathers, but borrowed it from future generations.

It is, therefore, everybody’s responsibility to raise awareness and educate
each other with good environmental practices in our daily activities.
