Deputy Minister to officially open the National School
Indigenous Games, Music and Movement festival in Limpopo

21 September 2006

The Department of Education will host the National School Indigenous Games,
Music and Movement Festival at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, from 22 to
24 September 2006. The Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Enver Surty, will
officially open the Festival on Friday, 22 September 2006, at 18h00.

The National School Indigenous Games, Music and Movement Festival is a joint
initiative of the Department of Education, the Department of Arts and Culture,
and the Department of Sport and Recreation to mobilise and encourage South
African learners to embrace our cultural diversity through dance, music and
games as part of Heritage Month celebrations.

The festival also aims to promote social cohesion, nation building, a
national common identity and pride.

This year the festival is aligned to the commemoration of the 10th
anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, the 30th anniversary of the
Soweto Uprising (16 June), the 50th anniversary of the Women's March (9
August), the 50th anniversary of the Treason Trial, the 100th anniversary of
the birth of Gandhi's Satyagraha movement, and the 100th anniversary of the
Bhambata Rebellion.

Learners from across the country will participate in indigenous games such
as deketo, dibeke, kgati, ncuva, morabaraba, jukskei, kho-kho, tik-tok, scotch
and blikkies.
