The Department of Education, in partnership with Sport and Recreation South
Africa and the Transnet Foundation, is hosting an internodal tournament in
Mamelodi from 29 November to 1 December 2006.
The Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Enver Surty, will formally declare the
event open.
The tournament is part of an initiative to lower the crime rate and increase
learner attendance at schools. Teacher development, the construction of
facilities, and sports tournaments for rural and farm schools will also be
receiving attention.
About 1 260 learners in the under-17 and under-19 age groups will
participate in the following codes:
* athletics
* basketball
* chess
* netball
* soccer
* volleyball.
