E Surty and M Gigaba to visit Khayelitsha as part of Youth and Democracy
Education Campaign, 19 May

Deputy Ministers of Education and Home Affairs to visit
Khayelitsha in the Western Cape Province

17 May 2006

The Deputy Ministers of Education and of Home Affairs will on Friday, 19 May
2006, from 09h00, visit the False Bay FET College (Good Hope Campus) at
Khayelitsha in the Western Cape. The visit by Deputy Ministers Ever Surty and
Malusi Gigaba is part of the Youth and Democracy Education Campaign (YDEC).

The YDEC is a joint initiative by the Education and the Home Affairs
departments to mobilise the youth of South Africa not only to understand the
importance of democratic processes but also to participate and seize available
opportunities.

The campaign targets mainly young people from communities surrounding
Further Education and Training (FET) colleges, particularly those found in the
remote and nodal areas of the country. The campaign is also used to profile the
FET College sector as an important sector in the education system for
intermediate to high skills development training.

The two Deputy Ministers will participate on various activities. These
include visits to schools in Khayelitsha and a debate amongst young people on
issues affecting them.

Amongst other organisations expected to attend the event are Umsobomvu Youth
Fund, the National Youth Commission (NYC), Independent Election Commission
(IEC) and other government departments.

The Western Cape is the third province visited by the Deputy Ministers.
Limpopo and Mpumalanga took part in the Youth and Democracy in Education
Campaign late last year and early this year, respectively.
