The Youth and Democracy Education Campaign is a joint initiative by the
Department of Education and Home Affairs to mobilise the youth of South Africa
to participate in the country's democratic processes, while at the same time
taking full advantage of the opportunities available.
The campaign targets mainly students attending FET colleges, particularly
those found in the remote areas of the country.
Other objectives of the campaign are to:
* create awareness about FET Colleges and their programmes
* mobilise young people to acquire identity documents (IDs) and birth
certificates.
* promote youth access and utilisation of government services
* promote good citizenship amongst young people.
The Ministers will participate in various activities, which include visits
to schools surrounding the Ehlanzeni FET College, Provincial College Career
Fair, and a debate amongst young people on issues affecting them.
Amongst other organisations expected to attend the event are, Umsobomvu
Youth Fund, National Youth Commission, Independent Election Commission and
Department of Social Development.
The Campaign will be undertaken in all the provinces and Mpumalanga is the
second province after Limpopo, which was visited late last year.
