Deputy Minister, Mr E Surty to address the National
Consultative Workshop on the Health and Wellness Programme in Education, 24
July

The Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Enver Surty, will deliver the keynote
address at the National Consultative Workshop on the Health and Wellness
Programme at Kopanong Hotel, Benoni on Monday, 24 July 2006, at 09h10.

The workshop is expected to come up with implemental resolutions that will
assist the Department of Education (DoE) to improve its Health Promotions
Programmes. The DoE has committed itself to strive towards the health and
wellness of both learners and employees within the education system.

The objectives of the consultative workshop are as follows:

* to rethink the DoE’s intervention strategy on the Health and Wellness
Programme particularly on HIV and AIDS
* to review existing departmental interventions for the general health of the
learners and educators in relation to curricula, pre-service and in-service
respectively, through life skills, peer education, care and support,
environmental, mental and physical health (communicable and non-communicable
diseases) and school safety
* to discuss the phased implementation of the Policy Framework and Guidelines
for the Prevention and Management of Drug use/Abuse by learners in all public
schools and further education and training institutions
* to define roles, responsibilities and accountability issues of the various
partners in delivering effective and efficient health and wellness programmes
to all learners and educators in the system
* to rethink the existing funding model to improve the delivery of the Health
and Wellness Programme for learners and educators
* to map out and develop a generic implementation plan for the Health and
Wellness Programme of learners and educators.

Both internal and external stakeholders of the department to participate
include: teacher unions, parents/school governing boards (SGBs), learner
organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community-based
organisations (CBOs) and faith-based organisations (FBOs), government
departments and agencies, Department of Education, higher education
institutions (Council on Higher Education - CHE, Higher Education South Africa
- HESA), Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) and South African Council
for Educators (SACE).

From Pretoria
Take the R21 (North) Highway towards Johannesburg International Airport, take
the Benoni off-ramp, turn left at the top of the off-ramp, follow the road to
the traffic light, at the Engen garage turn left onto the M32, go through three
sets of traffic lights and a stop street, at the stop street keep straight, ±
400 metres after the stop street turn right into Glen Gory Road, Kopanong Hotel
is 400 metres down Glen Gory Road on the left.

From Johannesburg
Take the most convenient route towards Johannesburg International Airport (R24
Highway), then follow the R21 (North) Highway towards Pretoria, pass the
Kempton Park and Atlas off-ramps and take the third off-ramp being Pomona, turn
right at the top of the off-ramp at the traffic light, follow the M32 for
8.5km, (you will go through four sets of traffic lights and a stop street), at
the stop street keep straight, ± 400 metres after the stop street turn right
into Glen Gory Road, Kopanong Hotel is 400 metres down Glen Gory Road on the
left.

N12 East
Take the N12 to Benoni, pass the East Rand Mall Shopping Centre, pass the Atlas
Road off-ramp and take the next off-ramp, Tom Jones. Turn left at the traffic
light (you are now in Bunyan Street which becomes the Great North Road).
Proceed with the Great North Road, at the 7th traffic light, turn right into
Oak Street. Go through three four-way stops and pass the Oakfield’s Pick 'n Pay
Shopping Centre on your right hand side. Keep travelling straight on Oak
Street, the road name changes to Benoni Road, which becomes Glen Gory road.
From here, Kopanong Hotel is four km down the road on the right.
