Conference in Robben Island
8 May 2006
Top brains, experts and heritage practitioners of the Western Cape will
gather at the Gateway to Robben Island on Saturday, 13 May 2006, for a day-long
conference on the importance and impact of all forms of heritage on the economy
of the province and country.
The Consultative Conference is a collaborative effort between the National
Heritage Council and the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
Its main aim is to bring together practitioners, academics, municipalities,
institutions and organisations involved in the heritage sector, to discuss the
state of heritage and interventions that would ensure the industry contributes
to tourism, economic development, poverty alleviation within the framework of
the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy.
The conference is an attempt to bring the Western Cape in line with the law
reform process and Draft Arts, Cultura and Heritage policy review and acquaint
practitioners with their responsibilities in terms of applicable heritage law.
Among others the conference will deal with the commemoration of slave history
because of the long history of slavery in the province.
The venue for the conference Gateway to Robben Island is symbolic both as
World Heritage Site as well as the site in which struggles for human rights
were staged. It also has strong links to the history of slavery as well as a
colonial entry point. Plenary sessions will discuss the strategies for
contribution in the economy in the following broad categories; Khoisan
heritage, slave heritage, living heritage, community museums, heritage
legislation and heritage training.
Premier Ebrahim Rasool will deliver a keynote address.
