Disability, Child and Youth (GDCY) issues
24 November 2006
On 27 November, Minister in The Presidency, Dr Essop Pahad, will meet with
Mayors and Municipality Managers from Gauteng, Limpopo and North West as part
of his drive to promote and strengthen mainstreaming of GDCY rights in the
developmental programmes of municipalities.
Senior officials from the South Africa Local Government Association (SALGA)
and MECs for Local Government will also be in attendance.
This initiative aims to familiarise municipalities with the GDCY strategic
agenda of government; the promotion of close co-operation and synergy between
municipalities, provinces and national programmes, as well as to strengthen
support for GDCY work in municipalities.
South Africa locates national accountability for delivery on the rights of
women, people with disabilities, children and youth in The Presidency because
GDCY mainstreaming, co-ordination and oversight responsibilities are best
accomplished in The Presidency, working in close co-operation with national
departments, provinces and municipalities.
