E Molewa on public service during Imbizo Focus Week

North West to clamp down on unhelpful public servants

21 October 2007

The North West provincial government will clamp down on government officials
whose conduct undermines its objectives of providing good service to the
people, Premier Edna Molewa announced.

The Premier was speaking at an Imbizo held at Madibogopan in Ratlou Local
Municipality on Friday, where some residents raised dissatisfaction with the
manner in which certain government officials treated members of the public.

Molewa said she viewed the allegations in serious light because government
could not afford to have in its employ officials whose acts are inconsistent
with the goal of providing a better life for all.

This, she said, would undermine the gains of democracy and the confidence
that people have on government.

However, the Premier acknowledged that there were committed and patriotic
public servants who have contributed towards changing other people's lives
through their work.

For this reason, the Premier highlighted that all the specific cases that
were mentioned at the Imbizo would be followed up to ascertain what transpired
and ensure that measures are put in place to guarantee consistent delivery of
good services to the people.

"We are government because of the people and it is in this context that we
will always put people first in whatever we do. The public service must
therefore be in a position to ensure that the promises made to the people are
delivered to. In this regard, government officials will be at the forefront of
delivering services which is a reason enough for them to treat all the people
with respect and dignity," said Molewa.
